1977, Chicago. A club called The Warehouse. Frankie Knuckles plays all night, and people name the sound after the building: house. Its parents were disco, soul and gospel — Black American music whose rhythmic roots run back to Africa. The four-on-the-floor kick was always a drum circle in disguise.
Larry Heard slows house down and gives it a soul: "Can You Feel It," 1986. Four-on-the-floor + warm chords + machine drums.
South Africa takes the skeleton and gives it different blood: live percussion, chants, spiritual bass. Same recipe — deeper roots.
1990s South Africa: apartheid falls, house floods in — and the townships slow it to their own walk: kwaito. South Africa becomes the biggest house-music nation on earth. From Durban rises Black Coffee — to a Grammy in 2022 and residencies on dance music's biggest stages.
